Most of the people that I know of choose the profession of journalist because they want to be seen on TV and be famous. But in my personal opinion journalism is something more that the work on TV, it is being a reflection of everything that is happening in society. You may be silent and do not write anything but people from the first sight will understand what is the situation in the given place. Journalists are always blamed to be layers but in reality those are the people who actually say truth. So the main point that I want to make in this article is that journalists are safety balloon, open window and fourth estate for the society.
Journalism always will be a safety balloon for the society because it is the only way to hear, see, read and just receive objective information about the things that are happening around us. Let’s consider examples from the past. The situation that was observed in USSR showed how people were in process of intellectual and social degradation because the government, which used media and journalism as a propaganda tool-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda, moderated the only media that was available in the country. What I mean by this is that media is the savior from social and intellectual isolation and is a motivator and stimulator of intellectual, social, economic, personal and other development. Information always was a vital element in life of people throughout their history.
Another function of journalism is the so-called open window. This concept that I made out in my head after 6 years of journalism practice means that journalists see everything from a special angle of objectivity and consider everything to be a subject for news. Journalist is like a window it accepts all the information that come in and out and after filtering it by the point of importance brings it to people. For example, some people may not notice that the new law was passed in government but journalists can point it out. Or some people haven’t been in Brazil and don’t know about the catastrophic poverty problem in that country but journalists have opportunity to go there and cover this topic in the news.
S0metimes journalism can be a threat for the society - in case of bad journalism which I prefer not to call journalism but propaganda or spon-doctoring or black PR. Sometimes journalism can threat people by providing some information or opinion pieces, pictures of dead bodies and other cheesy things shown on TV can negatively affect people's mind but overall importance of journalism and positive effects that it brings to society is much more important.
Another importance of journalism is that it is a part of democratic development because democracy means plurality and free journalism can offer this plurality in different means and can be a key to successful democratic development - http://taylorandfrancis.metapress.com/(ezlb3p55omtpmcbsq5zsqmek)/app/home/contribution.asp?referrer=parent&backto=issue,5,12;journal,29,29;linkingpublicationresults,1:104721,1
So I think that if someone wants to become a journalist he or she must be free of prejustices and be as open as possible and have a great desire to help people and change something in the world for better.

Sincerely yours,
